Liner Notes

DON'T SETTLE

Whatever you do, don't settle

Please don't settle

I've been looking for the truth

Since I left it in my youth

But if you seek it you will find

There's a holy light that shines

Through the troubles in our minds

Through the rubble in our lives

There's a spirit in the air

Moving gently through your hair

Like a song or a prayer

For everybody, everywhere

Whatever you do, you gotta be true

To whatever's in the heart of you

I know the night will blind your eyes and you won't see

But soon the morning sun will shine and set you free

I know the winter will send a shiver through your bones and a quiver through your knees

But soon the spring, will be blowing easy

So please don't settle

Promise me you won't settle

Whatever you do

Don't settle

Please don't settle

If it isn't in the heart of you

Is it good, is it beautiful, is it true?

Was it made to be meaningful

Does it flow like a river from the soul in you

Is it good, is it beautiful, is it true?

Does it spring up like a fountain grows

In the heart from the deepest part in you?

And then flow like a waterfall

Over the roots and the rocks in your soul?

Is it good, is it beautiful, is it true?

Then don't settle

Promise me you won't settle

Whatever you do

Don't settle

Please don't settle

If it isn't in the heart of you

TRUST

Everybody needs to find someone

Everybody needs to find someone they can believe

Everybody needs somebody they can trust

Everybody needs somebody they can trust

Everybody needs to find someone

Where they can run when the darkness comes

Everybody needs to know where to go

When the moon don't shine and the sun don't show

Everybody needs to find somebody they can trust

Everybody needs to find someone

Everybody needs to find someone they can believe

Everybody needs somebody they can trust

Have you found somebody you can trust

Everybody needs to find someone

Where they can run when the darkness comes

Everybody needs to know where to go

When the moon don't shine and the sun don't show

You and I gonna find someone

Where we can run when the kingdom comes

You and me gonna find somebody we can trust

HILLS OF ENGLAND

I wanna get lost in the hills of England

I wanna go wherever she wills the wind and

Lay down in the grass

And watch the hours pass

Until at last my spirit will go free

O England England old and true

So green and gray and red and blue

What's a boy supposed to do

Dearest England

When I think of you

I wanna get lost in the hills of England

I wanna go wherever she wills the wind and

Lay down in the grass

And watch the hours pass

Until at last my spirit will go free

O England England made of stone,

You are such a heavy home

O England England cold and grey

I got nothing, left to say

I wanna get lost in the hills of England

I wanna go wherever she wills the wind and

Lay down in the grass

And watch the hours pass

Until at last my spirit will go free

Stone over stone, hand over hand

Year over year, the man on the land

Lay down your wreath upon the feet

Of heavy ancient royal feet

Beneath the thrones and stones and hollow homes

The grass, and the moss, and the peat

I wanna get lost in the hills of England

I wanna go wherever she wills the wind and

Lay down in the grass

And watch the hours pass

Until at last my spirit will go free

SIMPLE LIFE

Lord, Lord I need the simple life

Lord, Lord I need the simple life

Everything is in flux

That's why I don't say much

If I should say something now

I'll be wrong later somehow

Lord I need the simple life

A healthy son, a holy wife,

I'll go and work out in the fields

And come home to my baby's meal

This loaf of bread and butter knife

This could get me through this life

Lord, Lord I need the simple life

How can we know what it means

When it means so much?

How can we love what we don't see

When all we need is to touch?

Lord I need the simple life

A healthy son, a holy wife,

I'll go and work out in the fields

And come home to my baby's meal

This loaf of bread and butter knife

This could get me through this life

Lord, Lord I need the simple life

Let's take this river and ride

Over to the other side

Let's take this rhythm and roll

Back before the things that we know

MERCY

May every word be spoken, and every truth be told

May every promise be unbroken, every gift turned into gold

And let there be mercy, mercy, mercy

Let there be mercy, mercy, mercy

May every curse be broken, and every hope revealed

May every blessing be unbroken, and every broken heart be healed

And let there be mercy, mercy, mercy

Let there be mercy, mercy, mercy

Let the water flow, let the light shine

Let the blood go through me like a river winds

Through the valley, through the meadow

Through my spirit and my soul just like a river goes

Through the mountain, under the moonlight

Let the blood go through me till I truly see the light

And let there be mercy Lord,

Oh, let there be mercy Lord.

Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, forgive us all the things we've done

Leave the writing on the wall, but don't let it fall, don't let it fall

And let there be mercy, mercy, mercy

Let there be mercy, mercy, mercy

Let there be mercy for my brother and sister, my mother, my family

Let there be mercy for my friends and lovers, my foes and enemies

Let there be mercy for my words and wars, deeds and deeds I didn't do

Let there be mercy for every soul in this city may the Lord have pity over you

Let the water flow, let the light shine

Let the blood go through me like a river winds

Through the valley, through the meadow

Through my spirit and my soul just like a river goes

Over the mountain, under the moonlight

Let the blood go through me till I truly see the light

And let there be mercy Lord,

Oh, let there be mercy Lord

Jesus build a ship, let us sing a song

Let the spirit on the face of the water be the wind in the sail that carries us home.

MINNEAPOLIS

Oh Minneapolis,

I saw you and Saint Paul kiss

Neath the moonlight in a Mississippi mist

Never saw a thing as beautiful as this

Oh Minneapolis

Oh Minneapolis,

City on the water where the angels walk

O Saint Paul, city of peace and righteousness

City where the Lord and the angels talk

Oh Minneapolis,

I saw you and Saint Paul kiss

Neath the moonlight in a Mississippi mist

Never saw a thing as beautiful as this

Oh Minneapolis

Rain down, purple rain (I wanna hear the sound)

I wanna feel the royal rain on me

I wanna feel the holy water running like a holy stream

I wanna be baptized in the city in the Mississippi

I wanna be baptized in the city in the Mississippi

O Minneapolis,

I saw you and Saint Paul kiss

Neath the moonlight in a Mississippi mist

Never saw a thing as beautiful as this

Oh Minneapolis

THE DARK

I don't wanna go out tonight, if you're staying at home

I don't wanna go out in the dark of the night and leave you alone

The air is getting heavy, I feel like a rolling stone

Weighing me down like the memory of a Minnesota winter when I'm far from home

The dark is getting deeper, I feel so far from home

Pulling me in like the memory of the feeling of the fear of being all alone

I don't wanna go out tonight, if you're staying at home

I don't wanna go out in the dark of the night and leave you alone

The rain is getting heavy, falling like a waterfall

Filling my shoes with the memories of me and you in Belfast in the fall

The rain is beating harder, here comes a cannonball

Flooding my veins, but the feeling is the same, being without you after all

I don't wanna go out tonight, if you're staying at home

I don't wanna go out in the dark of the night and leave you alone

If I gotta be alone tonight, I'll be praying for the morning light

I don't wanna be a moon in the sky where the sun don't shine

And the rain ain't nothing but the tears we cry tonight

THE TURF CLUB

One more night under the city lights

I've got my jacket and I'm ready to go

Into the heat of a St Paul street

Summer in the city below

The Broadway lights, they treat me right

And watch me when I'm going home

One more kiss, before we do this

And take it on down to the show

Everybody's at the Turf Club

Over in Saint Paul

Dancing underneath the bar light

To the sound of Rock 'n' Roll

A local band is playing country songs

Everybody wants to sing along

One more drink before the moonlight sinks

Into the belly of a beautiful sky

It's cold out there in the Saint Paul air

And baby I've had too much to drive

Well take my hand, I'll be your man

You can be my baby tonight

One last dance for an old romance

Before somebody turns on the light

Everybody's at the Turf Club

Over in Saint Paul

Dancing underneath the bar light

To the sound of Rock 'n' Roll

A local band is playing country songs

Everybody wants to sing along

These Saint Paul city lights

Are just the angels that are watching over you tonight

These beautiful country songs

Another way of saying that we wanna belong

GOD ONLY KNOWS

I would rather be

A lover for my lady

A mother for my baby

Than a sailor on the sea

Underneath the lights

We look bigger than we are

We look brighter than the falling star

Of brief celebrity

God only knows how the winds gonna blow

And how it all flows together

If the words we use or the wars we choose

Are gonna change somebody for the better

God only knows

I know what it's like

When you lose your inspiration

Blow a fuse to the sensation

That you used to feel so bright

Many are the things

In my mind that I would sing

In my soul that I would bring

If I could find the words tonight

God only knows how the winds gonna blow

And how it all flows together

If the words we use or the wars we choose

Are gonna change somebody for the better

God only knows how the winds gonna blow

And how it all flows together

If the words we use or the wars we choose

Are gonna change somebody's life forever

God only knows

THANK YOU

Thank you for the way you make a feeling real

Rolling through my heart like a ferris wheel

Thank you for a pretty little laughing heart

Thank you from my heart, thank you from my heart

Thank you for the way you make your light to shine

In between the shadows in the back of my mind

Thank you for the children and the love I've found

Thank you from my heart, thank you from my heart

Let there be light, let there be love, let there be space

Let all the water flow together through the ether and gather in a beautiful place

Thank you for the way you make the showers fall

Like a blanket on the valley when the flowers call

Thank you for creating and sustaining it all

Thank you from my heart and my soul

Thank you from my heart and my soul

Thank you for the way you make the music play

In between the quiet on a beautiful day

Thank you for the meaning in the things we say

Thank you from my heart, thank you from my heart

Let there be light, let there be love, let there be space

Let all the water flow together through the ether and gather in a beautiful place

Let there be earth, let there be sea, let there be sky

Let all the water flow together through the ether and gather over you and I

Thank you for the way you make the flowers grow

Up through the cracks in my fractured soul

Thank you for the way the healing waters flow

Thank you from my heart and my soul

Thank you from my heart and my soul

Thank you for the way you make the moonlight shine

Between me and the horizon there's a perfect line

Like a love upon the ocean anybody can find

Thank you from my heart and my mind

Thank you from my heart and my mind

Let there be light, let there be love, let there be grace

Let all the water flow together through the ether and gather in a beautiful place

Let there be earth, let there be sea, let there be sky

Let all the water flow together through the ether and gather over you and I

Thank you for the way you make my soul to sing

With the feeling there's a meaning here in everything

Thank you for giving me the gift I bring

Thank you from my heart

Thank you from my heart

THE CHILD

I am not the one, who taught my heart to beat

I cannot add a breath, even a step into my feet

I could not tell you where all of these thoughts even begin

I barely know this body that I'm traveling in

But I must use these hands to dig the land that I must sow

And feed upon the fruit of my love's labor when it grows

And think about a bed to lay my head when day is through

Rest this heavy heart, that it may start when tomorrow's new

I gave the seed that sprung to feed the soul of my own son

But a magic full of mystery grew those legs on which he runs

And I'll never know, how grew his soul, so wonderful and wild

He's a part of me but mystery, mostly grows the child

And the song that I now sing, from whence did spring the melody?

I cannot pin the origin, that sang the song to me

But I will be an emissary in my life upon the sea

Like a gift adrift the ocean, did the notion come to me

Like a gift adrift the ocean, did the notion flow to me

How can we ever know the way that the spirit flows to the bones

In the belly of a lady with a baby that grows even while her momma sleeps

Just so, we'll never know the way of the spirit in the river that flows

Through the valley in the canyon of the soul it's a secret she keeps
